AI & Your Homeschool

Your children will grow up with AI. Here's how to make sure they lead it, not just use it.

We researched, tested, and vetted 15 AI tools and curricula for homeschool families. This is the honest guide to using AI in your homeschool, and to teaching your children to understand it.

18%of U.S. schools had AI policies in 2025. Your homeschool can be ahead of 82%.

The two-track framework

First, the two things everyone confuses.

Track 1: Use AI to homeschool better

Tools that help you plan lessons, tutor your children, adapt to their pace, and save hours of prep. These are tools FOR your homeschool. You use them, your children benefit.

Khanmigo, MagicSchool.ai, Math Academy, Synthesis

Track 2: Teach your children about AI

Curricula and activities that teach how AI works, what it cannot do, why it fails, and how to be a critical, ethical user. These are tools your children learn FROM.

Day of AI, Code.org, Teachable Machine, AI4K12

Our recommendation: do both, in the right order. Start with Track 1 so you understand AI from the inside. Then use that understanding to teach Track 2. A parent who has used Khanmigo with their child is a far better teacher of AI literacy than one who has only read about it.

Safety framework

The four questions to ask before any AI tool.

1

Is this designed for children, or adapted for them?

There is a real difference. Khanmigo was built from the ground up for K-12 learners. ChatGPT was designed for adults with a safer mode bolted on. Always prefer purpose-built over adapted.

2

What happens to your child's data?

Every AI tool processes the inputs it receives: your child's words, questions, and struggles. Tools with strong COPPA compliance handle this correctly. We note privacy ratings for every resource.

3

Does this tool promote thinking, or replace it?

The best AI tutors refuse to give answers directly. They ask questions. Test it yourself: ask it something you know the answer to and see whether it answers or asks.

4

Can you see what's happening?

The best tools have parent dashboards showing what your child worked on and where they struggled. Tools with no parent visibility are a black box. Avoid them for younger children.

The framework we use

Four levels of AI literacy. Where is your family?

Level 1: Awareness

Your child knows AI exists, knows many tools they use already contain it, and grasps that AI learns from data.

Achievable in one afternoon with Google's Teachable Machine.

Level 2: Critical Use

Your child can use AI productively and evaluate the outputs critically, knowing when to trust, verify, and question.

Achievable with Khanmigo, Perplexity, and the Day of AI Cognitive Debt lesson over a semester.

Level 3: Conceptual Understanding

Your child understands how machine learning works, what bias means, how deepfakes are made, and the basic ethics.

Achievable with Code.org and LittleLit AI over one school year.

Level 4: Creative & Technical Application

Your child can build simple AI models and reason about AI's design ethics and societal impact.

Achievable through Math Academy, advanced coding, and the AI4K12 framework.

Most families operate productively at Levels 2 and 3. Level 4 is for children drawn to the technical side. All four are teachable at home.

15 vetted resources

The resources we trust.

Every one below was evaluated against four criteria: designed for children, strong data privacy, promotes thinking rather than replacing it, and parent visibility.

Start here

The one activity to do this week.

Open Google's Teachable Machine. No account, no download. Have your child train a model to recognize two things, thumbs up versus thumbs down. Watch it learn, watch it fail, watch it improve. That 20-minute activity teaches the core idea of machine learning better than any textbook: AI learns from examples, and when the examples are bad, the AI is wrong. And it's free.

A note from Chance and Chey

The TikTok video that started this research, a family with three kids and a webcam training an AI model at their kitchen table, had 2.3 million views in 72 hours. Parents are hungry for this. They know AI is real, they know their children will live in a world shaped by it, and they don't know where to start. Homescool Scout exists to be the place families start. If you try any of these with your family, tell us what happened. We update this guide monthly. Find your homefolk, even in the AI era.
