HAVE SOME PRESSING CONCERNS/QUESTIONS?

Homeschooling is a huge change for children and parents. Here are some common questions we have found, we hope they help.

How do I unenroll my student from their current school?

1. Review Your State’s Homeschool Laws. You can find this info  2. Write a Withdrawal Letter. 3.Submit the Letter + Any Required Forms 4. Request Records 5. Begin Homeschooling!

Can my homeschool child still play public/school sports?

Yes, in many states, homeschooled students can still participate in public school sports thanks to what are often called “Tebow Laws” (named after Tim Tebow, a homeschooled athlete who played public high school football). Each state has its own specific rules, but typically, homeschoolers need to meet the same eligibility requirements as public school students—such as maintaining certain grades, living within the school district, and sometimes registering with the school board or providing academic records. Some states are more flexible than others, and some local school districts have additional policies, so it’s always best to check with your local district or state athletic association. Homeschool families are finding more and more ways for their kids to stay active, compete, and be part of a team!

How much time does this take?

Homeschooling doesn’t follow a one-size-fits-all schedule, and the amount of time it takes each day can vary greatly depending on your child’s age, learning style, and the method of homeschooling you choose. For example, structured approaches like Classical or Traditional homeschooling might involve 3–5 hours of focused instruction per day, while more relaxed or interest-led styles like Unschooling or Waldorf may allow for more fluid, experience-based learning that’s woven into daily life. Younger children typically need less formal time — sometimes just 1–2 hours — while older students may require longer periods for independent study or projects. Ultimately, the beauty of homeschooling is that it’s flexible and adaptable, allowing families to create rhythms that work for them rather than mirroring a rigid school schedule.

Can I legally homeschool my disabled child?

Yes! Homeschooling can be a flexible, nurturing option for children with special needs, allowing you to tailor education to your child’s pace, learning style, and strengths. Many families find it offers more emotional safety, one-on-one support, and room for therapeutic integration. For legal guidance, deeper knowledge, and resources by state, we recommend visiting HSLDA.org — they’re a trusted source for homeschooling advocacy, especially for families navigating special education.

How much does homeschooling cost?

Homeschooling can cost as little or as much as your family chooses to invest. On average, most families spend between $300 to $1,000 per child per year, depending on the curriculum, resources, and activities they choose. Some teaching styles like Unschooling or Charlotte Mason can be more budget-friendly, using free online resources, library books, and nature-based learning. Others, like Classical or Traditional programs, may involve more structured curriculum packages that come at a higher cost. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—homeschooling is incredibly flexible and can be adapted to meet your family’s educational goals and your budget.

How do I teach to multiple age groups?

Teaching multiple age groups might sound tricky at first, but it’s absolutely doable and many homeschooling families thrive doing just that! A great approach is to combine subjects like history, science, art, and literature by using a family-style curriculum where everyone learns the same topic at different levels. For example, you might read a story aloud to all your kids, then give younger ones a coloring activity while older ones write a summary or do a related project. Stagger independent work by starting with your youngest child’s needs first, then rotating your attention. You can also create a rhythm to your day where older children work independently while you guide the younger ones. The beauty of homeschooling is that it’s flexible—your days can flow based on your family’s dynamic and energy.

How do I even start to homeschool?

Getting started can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it all out at once. This helpful article breaks it down step-by-step: https://www.homeschoolgateway.org/planning-to-homeschool

About Homescool Scout

We’re “The Twins,” Chance and Chey — twin sisters, best friends, mamas, and the creators of Homescool Scout.

We built this space because we felt the same thing so many others do: the craving for community, freedom, and a homeschooling life full of meaning. We love that there are so many options for families out there, but we also know it can be overwhelming. So we set out to bring everything into one beautifully organized, soul-led space.

Homescool Scout is for the families seeking more soul, more play, and more freedom in how they raise and teach their children. For those who believe learning is a lifelong journey. For those who got lost in the chaos of life, family, and homeschooling. And for those who are just getting started and need someone to light the path.

Here, you’ll find curated curriculum ideas, books we love, your own homeschooling style, learning styles, activity calendars, discounts for both small and large groups, meetups, and a growing collective of likeminded families ready to walk this beautiful road together.

We’re not here to tell you how to homeschool.

We’re here to help you feel at home while doing it.

Because education should feel like living — not surviving.

And you were never meant to do it alone.
